About
Imran Qureshi is chief financial officer of Rupaya, a consumer lending platform that operates in partnership with three banks and an NBFC. He joined in 2024, arriving from a listed financial services company, and was brought in explicitly to prepare the business for the disclosure requirements of a public listing.
Much of his work has been unwinding the accounting habits of a private growth company. He rebuilt the firm’s revenue recognition around loan lifecycle rather than origination, which reduced reported revenue in the transition year, and consolidated eleven separate entity structures into four.
Qureshi is a chartered accountant and spent his early career in audit, which he says makes him a slower and more suspicious CFO than the market expects from a fintech.
Leadership perspective
- What surprised you moving from listed financial services to fintech?
- How much of the reporting was built to answer investor questions rather than to run the company. Those are different documents and we had been pretending they were one.
- What is the hardest conversation you have had here?
- Telling the founders that changing revenue recognition would make our best year look like our flattest. They took about a week. I would not have blamed them for taking longer.
